Record Run of Electric Automobile. Mr. Fred B. Whitney, clerk to the Committee on Naval .Affairsof the House of Representatives, established the worlds record atWashington, D. C, December 23, 1903, for an endurance run at thehighest long-distance speed of an electric auto upon a single chargeof storage battery. President A. L. Cline, of the local AutomobileAssociation, acted as referee. The start was from the Dewey Hotelat Tuesday night, December 22, in an electric Stanhopeequipped with a 570-pound Porter battery and the run was made uponthe streets of Washington. At Wednesday morning the Stanhopecollided with a heavy covered wagon, spilling considerable batteryfluid, tearing off a tire, breaking spokes and springing axles, etc.,and was hauled to a repair shop. .\ distance of miles was. made in the actual time of 9 hours and 12 minutes, or about 12miles per hour. The longest runs without shutting off current were31, 23 and 21 miles. At 2 Wednesday after hasty temporaryrepairs had been completed the run was resumed and miles weremade in i hour and 30 minutes under the difficulties of a The Stanhope was run to its garage under its own powerand showed a voltage of over per cell and could have made moremiles without accident. The total distance run was miles in10 hours and 32 minutes, or about 12 miles per hour. This estab-lishes a worlds record for long-distance run upon a single chargeat the rate of 12 miles per hour and raises the long-distance rateone mile per hour. The worlds record at 11 miles per hour wasmade at Cleveland, 1902, at 151 miles. The worlds record at 10miles per hour was made by Mr. F. C. Phillips, of Cleveland, atChicago at 1S7 miles, using Porter battery. ro6 ELECTRICAL WORLD and ENGINEER N
