Russian General Mikhail Skobelev on horseback, (1883). Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobelev (1843-1882) was a Russian soldier who distinguished himself in the conquest of Central Asia and in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Popular with his soldiers for always being in the thick of the action on the battlefield, his death from a heart attack at the age of 38 was regarded with suspicion by many. Found in the collection of the State Art Museum, Irkutsk, Russia.
