On April 16, 1862, David Farragut and Union forces began the bombardment of Fort Jackson near the mouth of the Mississippi.

The Union plan was to divide the Confederacy by taking control of the Mississippi River. On April 16, 1862, under the command of David Farragut, Union forces began the bombardment of Fort Jackson near the mouth of the Mississippi. For seven days the bombardment continued, but the fort held out. Farragut did clear a passage and sent his ships to New Orleans. Fort Jackson surrendered on April 28, 1862.
