The city of Butte and the town of Centerville, one of its suburbs,were connected, in the year 1S97, by a cable passenger railway,which did service until about a year ago, when plans were made losubstitute therefor electric traction and to make the necessarychanges in the alignment and grades. The cable was run in an almost direct line between the two overcame an elevation of 390 ft. between Park street, Butte, andCenter street, Centerville, a distance of mile, and had grades assteep as 14 per cent. The plan of the now enterprise was to construct a double-trackelectric railway, if possible, upon grades not exceeding 5 per W. E. B.\KER. roads. After doing pioneer surveying work for two years in theRocky Mountains he was engaged as resident engineer in steamroad building for the International & Great Northern in Texas. In1883 on a trip to St. Paul Mr. Baker met Miss Griffin from NewYork who was visiting Governor Merriain, and she afterwards be-came his wife. In :888 he went 10 Boston and associated himself with the Thom-son-Houston Co. and here gained his first electrical experience. TheWest End Street Railway was the first large railway system to beequipped for electric traction, and Mr. Baker had ample opportunityto demonstrate his ability as superintendent of the surface roads inBoston. After finishing his work there the General Electric Coin-pany secured his services for a time. The Intramural Railway of theWorlds Fair was constructed and operated under his supervisionand it was demonstrated in service that the third-rail system waspractical for elevated railways.
