Square and Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, Europe.

Square and Church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, Europe. The church was built between 1279 and 1360 and the facade, by Leon Battista Alberti, was added in 1458-1470. The church is situated just across from the Florence Santa Maria Novella railway station. Chronologically, it is the first great basilica in Florence, and is the city's principal Dominican church. The church, the adjoining cloister, and chapterhouse contain a store of art treasures and funerary monuments. Especially famous are frescoes by masters of Gothic and early Renaissance. They were financed through the generosity of the most important Florentine families, who ensured themselves of funerary chapels on consecrated ground. The Public Square of Santa Maria Novella is one of the more important public squares in Florence.
