The river, because of the heavy rain and ice .iam^ went over the banks, 80 this establishment was about eighteen iiifhes under water. The boiler pits were filled and the fires were ])ut out. Tlie water was over all the heating j)ipes and went above the solid benches. This com- pletely ruined the whole crop of snap- dragons, daisies and other s])ring flowers that were coming into bloom. The com- pany also lost many plants that were in bloom. The thermometer was around the freezing point and a great number of oil lamps and charcoal stoves were used, which saved most of the bedding stock. The William Eschrich place also suf- fered considerable damage, both in the greenhouses and nurseries. A great many of the young evergreen trees and many ornamental shrubs on the exten- sive grounds were partly under water. These were later frozen in the solid ice, with the result that the stock was broken up and badly damaged. .1. H. Dale and daughter, of Hough- ton, Mich., were in the city several days, being forced to stay here on account of there being no train service to the north.
