Jesus College, Cambridge – UK

A view of Jesus College, Cambridge, founded 1496 by John Alcock, Bishop of Ely (1486–1500) in the reign of Henry VII. Alcock incorporated and adapted the buildings of the Benedictine nunnery of St Mary and St Radegund which was founded c. 1133–38. Jesus College is one of the constituent colleges of Cambridge University. Its best-known graduates include Thomas Cranmer, Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury and author of the Book of Common Prayer, burnt at the stake in 1556 in the reign of Queen Mary, John Flamsteed, the First Astronomer Royal, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the writer Laurence Sterne. The view shows the main entrance gateway to Jesus College, at the end of the passage from Jesus Lane known as The Chimney. To the right of the gatehouse tower is the Master’s Lodge, and the Chapel tower is visible at far right. The picture was drawn by Harraden and etched by Elizabeth Byrne. Published 01 November 1809 by R. Harraden and Son, Cambridge and by R. Cribb and Son, London.
