Gold, coj^per, lead,iron, coal, salt, lime, marls, gypsum, magnesian and alumearths, marbles, granites, soap-stones, and sand-stones areamong the treasures, as yet for the most part lying unheededin the bowels of the earth. Mining industry, however, hasbeen commenced, and within the past few years has been won-derfully developed. The first coal-field is found at the junction of the Tide-Waterand Piedmont sections; and this extends from the Pamunkyby Richmond to the Appomattox, a distance of about thirty-fivemiles, with a breadth of from one or two to eight miles.
