The Celilo canal is eight and one-half miles in lengthand commands a total descent of eighty-one is overcome by five locks, though almost the entiredescent is accomplished by a tandem lock at the lowerend. By this improvement the Columbia can be navi-gated the year round from the Ocean to Priest Rapids,about four hundred and fifteen miles. The Snake is. Fire-Canoes Follow Log-Canoes 247 navigable for light draft boats about eight months inthe year nearly two hundred miles from its mouth orabout five hundred and fifty miles from the next great improvements in view on the Columbiaare canal and locks at three points: Priest Rapids, RockIsland Rapids, and Kettle Falls, together with someminor improvement of channels at other points, bywhich series of operations there will be continuous navi-gation from the Ocean to Revelstoke, B. C, a thousandmiles. The corresponding improvement on the Snake willbe its canalization between the mouth and the junctionwith the Salmon River, by which there may be con-tinuous, all-year navigation from the mouth for twohundred and fifty miles.
