Marie Rôze made her operatic debut in Paris in 1865 and was subsequently popular in the UK and USA, touring both countries with the Carl Rosa Opera Company in the late 19th century. Marie Rôze was born Marie Hippolyte Ponsin in Paris in 1846. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and made her debut at the Opéra Comique in 1865. Her success there led to her debut at the Paris Opéra in 1869. The Franco-Prussian war of 1870 - 1871 interrupted her career but in 1872, after the war, she made her debut in London at Drury Lane Theatre as Marguerite in Gounod's 'Faust'. She was a leading member of JH Mapleson's company at Her Majesty's Theatre in London for the next decade. From 1876 she sang with the Carl Rosa Opera Company and toured widely in the UK with both Mapleson and Rosa. Marie Rôze was engaged by the Max Strakosch Opera Company in 1877 and made her American debut in 1878 in Philadelphia as Leonora in Donizetti’s 'La favorita'. She toured the USA with the Carl Rosa Company from 1883 to 1889 and was acclaimed for her interpretation of the title role in Bizet’s 'Carmen'. In 1890, she taught singing in Paris and in 1894, embarked on a farewell tour. She was at ease singing in English, having spent part of her childhood in England. Her first husband, an American musician named Perkins, died in 1874. Her second husband was ‘Colonel’ Henry Mapleson, a son of the impresario James Henry Mapleson (1830-1901) who managed Her Majesty's Theatre.
