Alexander Monro (1773-1859), Scottish anatomist. Monro was the third of a dynasty of anatomists that taught at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. However, Monro tertius had never trained or practised as a surgeon and it was said he was mediocre and did not compare with his father and grandfather. His works included 'Outlines of the Anatomy of the Human Body' (4 volumes, 1811) and 'Elements of Anatomy' (2 volumes, 1825). Monro was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1798. He was elected President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1825, having served as the College's secretary for eleven years.
