In 1888, Stanley's expedition was in dire straits with little food. In this 1890 illustration, foragers return with plantains.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley was a British explorer and journalist who was sent by the New York Herald to find David Livingstone (1879-1884). In 1887, he left on another African expedition that led concessions for the British. In December 1888, Stanley's expedition was in dire straits with little food because members had discarded their food believing that plantain groves were nearby. Foragers went in search of plantains. This illustration from Stanley's 1890 book "In Darkest Africa" shows Stanley (in the center with a cap with a visor welcoming the foragers returning with plantains.
