John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, KG (1340- 1399) was an English nobleman, soldier, statesman, and prince, the third of five surviving sons of King Edward III of England. He was called "John of Gaunt" because he was born in Ghent, then rendered in English as Gaunt. As his father's and brother's healths deteriorated, and as the child King Richard II ascended to the throne, many of the responsibilities of government fell upon him, and he became the focus of popular discontent due to the numerous economic and military problems facing England.
