Cattleya aurea is a variety of epiphytic orchid of Cattleya dowiana that belongs to the Cattleya genus, a large orchid of epiphytic habits produced in Columbia. From Iconographie des Orchidees, a magazine of botanical illustrations published by Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898) was a Belgian botanist, explorer and horticulturist who specialised in orchids.
