MAGIC SYMBOLS - THE AZOTH AND THE PENTAGRAM Magic symbols drawn up with specific reference to a study of the secret design of the Tarot deck. [Left] The Azoth, or monogram of Hermetic Truth, is a play on a combination of four Greek letters spelling out Azoch, and three Hebrew letters (one of which is from a secret alphabet), spelling out the word Azoth (the three-armed sigil at the bottom of the design is the letter Zain, the equivalent of Z, from a Hebrew magical alphabet). The central letter is the Hebew aleph, the equivalent of the letter A. [Right] The Seal of the Microcosm. The five-pointed endless track of the pentagram is one of the most mysterious of all magical symbols. In this design, Levi has the played with the Hebrew letters of the Tetragrammaton, or four-letter name of God, in the points of the triangle, and with the three letters Aleph, Daleth and Samech, which have a numerical value of 65. Although there are five letters in the four-letter name, the numerical value is of four letters. These four letters, added to the three in the centre of the design, give a total of seven - the sacred number of both the Christian and cabbalistic systems. The two designs are lithographic facsimiles of drawings done by the French occultist, Eliphas LÚvi, in W. Wynn Westcott, The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum, 1896.
