As thereare eleven water-driven and eightsteam- drivenelectric plants inthe system con-trolled by thePacific Gas and Electric Company this generating plant is designatedas Station A. In size and output it is one of the largest plantsof its kind west of Chicago, and it requires the expertservices of one hundred men to operate its building is an immense brick structure ex-tending from street to street through a city block. Itis 450 ft. long, 140 ft. wide, and 80 ft. from its fireroom. station A, San Francisco. floor to its steel-ribbed roof of galvanized division wall runs the entire length of the buildingand makes of it two big rooms of equal size. The long room on the east side of this doublebuilding (the left-hand side in the picture) containsthe twenty-seven steam boilers, the six boiler-feedpumps, the one salt-water fire-pumps, the five econo-mizers, the three auxiliary exhaust feed-water heat-ers, the four fuel-oil pumps, thefive fuel-oil heat-ers, and all thesteam and waterpiping necessaryto the operationof this big mod-ern boiler plant,which has sixsmoke stacks andfour induced-draught fans toaccelerate thedraft in the boil-ers a n d econo-m i z e rs. Thelong room at thewest side is theengineroom, andit also containsthirteen electricgenerators.
