Among the natural products of the region two stand out aapre-eminently important—the wheat-plant and the date-palm.[PI. IV., Fig. 2.] According to the native tradition,^ wheatwas indigenous in Chaldeea; and the first comers thus foundthemselves provided by the bountiful hand of Nature with thechief necessary of life. The luxuriance of the plant was ex-cessive. Its leaves were as broad as the pahn of a mans hand,and its tendency to grow leaves was so great that (as we have Vol. Fig 1.
