GREAT LAKES (Oct. 26, 2022) Assistant Chief William Wheat, Great Lakes Fire & Emergency Services, receives the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal from Capt. Jason J. Williamson on the occasion of his retirement. Wheat served aboard Naval Station Great Lakes from April 1987 to October 2022. Williamson on the occasion of his retirement. Wheat served aboard Naval Station Great Lakes from April 1987 to October 2022. Throughout the course of his career, he was a vital member of the installation's fire team in responding to an average of 3,000 calls for service annually. Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navy’s largest training installation and the home of the Navy’s only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.
