His sec-ond son, William, came to New York aboutthe middle of the last century, where he mar-ried Katharine, second daughter and coheiress ofGen. William Alexander, Lord Stirling. Hewas an officer in the Revolutionary Army. Heleft many descendants. These arms [given in Burke to the surnameof Dever] have always been borne by the fam-ily. Sir Bernard Burke: The General Armory of England,etc., The Sir Francis Nicholson, mentioned, page63, as having received a grant of coat-armor asa reward for his meritorious services as a RoyalGovernor in Virginia, Maryland, Nova Scotia,South Carolina, died in 1728, and had neverbeen married. The original coat of arms of the family, whichwe give, Plate XVII., has been preserved andused, in this country, by the descendants of hisnephew, John Nicholson, whose two sons, Jamesand Samuel, both took service in the Revolu-tionary Navy. Samuel Nicholson died a senior officer in1813. He had married a niece of Sir JohnTemple. His brother, James, resigned after thewar, and settled in New York, where he mar-ried
