Trapeziumectomy wrist operation. Surgeon testing a patient's hand following a trapeziumectomy, an operation to remove the trapezium bone from the wrist. The patient is a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the immune system attacking the body's own tissues, causing progressive joint and cartilage destruction. Surgery is used to remove destroyed tissues. The test being carried out here is to see if the patient has regained full opposable use of the thumb.
