There is no other method of dealing with a severe displacementwhich leaves the limb so free from splints and bandages. Fromthe very outset, therefore, it can be treated by massage withmovement of the joints, and if there is an external wound, thedressing of this causes no displacement of the extending force. The special indications for this method, then, are as follows :-— 1. Great displacement of fragments by overlapping. 2. Old displacements. 3. Failure and inapplicability of other methods. 4. Open fractures. 5. Comminuted fractures. 6. Fractures near joints—especially the hip and the ankle. 7.
