Yorkshire, England, UK: ‘All on the sands together’ - but with some members of this three-generation 1930s British family perhaps more suitably dressed than others for a summer day on the beach. While a young boy sits on the sand at a seaside resort in a one-piece bathing costume, his father wears a collar and tie - and two elderly female relatives sit in their deckchairs fully covered up. They protect themselves from sunburn while also protecting their modesty in funereal black, with long dresses, overcoats, hats - and even a fur collar. This vintage monochrome photograph comes from a Yorkshire family collection and it was shot at Scarborough, Yorkshire, around 1935 or 1936.
