At each end of the wound oropening a couple of sutures are introduced beyond the endsof the cut to commence the turning in of the peritoneum. If the opening be a short one a stitch should be put in atthe middle, so as to be more certain that the sides come accur-ately together; if the opening be large other stitches may bepassed through the centre of each half. The needle is intro-duced a quarter of an inch or so from the wound, and is GASTR ORRAPHY. 12 3 brought out close to the edge on the same side; on the otherside it enters close to the edge and comes out a quarter of aninch or so away from it; the interrupted -method of suturingdoes not therefore differ in principle from the continuous.
