To obviate these difficulties, a lever is placed similar to that in Dr. Brownsmetro-urethrotome, at the distal end of the speculum, its contact with mucoussurfaces being prevented by side plates. This lever is controlled by the screwswith B, running on a thread and bearing against the head of one pair of lateralrods. The spreading of the proximal parts of the speculum is effected asusual, by. a screw, A, at the base. By this means the tips and base of the in-strument are independently controlled, consequently the arms may be spreadso as to be parallel or to converge at either ex-tremity.
