In-orbit validation (IOV) Galileo satellite being assembled at Thales Alenia Space’s facility in Rome, Italy. This is a test satellite for the European Space Agency's Galileo navigation system. Galileo will consist of 30 satellites orbiting over 23,000 kilometres above the Earth, transmitting data for position (longitude and latitude) and height above sea level (elevation). Four IOV satellites will be launched, two in October 2011 and two in 2012. They will validate the design of the satellites and the ground segments of the network. Photographed in May 2011.
