In 563 AD the Irish monk St. Columba arrived and built a Celtic church and established a monastic community. Columba then converted most of pagan Scotland and northern England to the Christian faith. Iona also beacme a sacred isle where around 48 kings of Scotland are buried. Monks of Iona produced the Book of Kells, which dates from 800 AD, currently on display in Trinity College, Dublin. In 806 the Viking raided and many of the monks were slaughtered and their work destroyed. Iona is beautiful, with white sandy beaches and a major tourist attraction and pilgrimage site, especially Iona Abbey. Scottish. Near Isle of Mull. Shore, spiritual, spirituality, atmosphere.
