Upon comparing the general nativity groups in the precedingtable, it is seen that slightly more than one-fifth, or to be exact, per cent, of the families the heads of which were white personsof native birth and per cent of those the heads of which were offoreign birth own their own homes. The families of the secondgeneration, or those whose heads were of native birth but of foreignfather, report a slightly larger proportion than the two nativitygroups mentioned above, or per cent, owning their homes. Avery unfavorable showing, by way of further comparison, is madeby native-born negro families with only per cent of home owner-ship. The figures showing this small degree of home ownershipamong the negro families should be modified by the statement,however, that a large proportion of the families represented werethose of bituminous coal mine workers in the Southern States whohad no opportunity to
