Oil is boomed off a tailings pond at the Syncrude mine. I used a helicopter to capture aerials, in order to appreciate the scale of the devastation caused by the tar sands mines. Taking to the air was the only time I escaped the attentions of security guards and Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who threatened me with arrest if I so much as took one step off the highway.
