Much has been learned in the way of developing properswitching arrangements, lightning arresters, etc., to take care of light-ning and other disturbances. Very little damage is done by light-ning discharges; only this summer has been tried with remarka-ble results the scheme of grounding through a lightning storm one of two circuits on the same pole line. Where lightning formerlyshut down the system for a short time, this summer several heavystorms have passed over the lines so grounded without doing anydamage or causing any interruption of service. One very important part of the transmission system is a properinstallation of telephones and circuits. The power houses on thissystem have rtne. an^l srimetimes two. teleplirjne lines connecting. MAIN RECEIVING STATION, SALT LAKE CITY. with the main Salt Lake City distributing station, also with the chiefoperating engineers office. Telephone instruments arc never leftconnected on the lines, only an extension bell, which is connectedto one side of a double throw switch. When a ring is received orgiven the switch is thrown over to the other side to connect thetelephone with the line. The lines are thoroughly equipped with atype of lightning arrester consisting of metal cylinders set very closetogether. These arresters are but a modification of a unit 01 theregular high tension lightning arrester. When a high tension wirebreaks and falls across the telephone, this arrester will care for thehigh tension current in a safe manner. It is also possible to keepup a conversation through a lightning storm, the arrester taking careof the discharges which may occur over the telephone lines. Ascareful attention is paid to the insulation of the telephone circuitsas to the
