A carved bench end at Rug Chapel, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, showing an ass carrying a shrine on its back. This may be a reference to human conceit in the form of Aesop's Ass: in the fable an ass carrying a religious image mistakes the homage of the crowd as being paid to him personally. There are rows of conjoined benches on either side of the aisle running from W to E, the ends facing into the aisle are carved with various symbols & fabulous creatures. The ass is third from the E on the S side. Holy Trinity was built in 1637 as a private chapel by staunch Royalist Colonel William Salusbury, governor of Denbigh Castle. It reflects some of the High Church experiments of the reign of King Charles I (1625-49). The redundant chapel has been restored and is in the care of Cadw.
