The building now known as Monument House was originally built in 1764 as a Scottish Presbyterian chapel and adjoins a burial ground known as the "Scotch Burial Ground". The burial ground was opened in 1760 and continued in use until 1855. The chapel was in use until 1812, when dwindling congregation numbers forced the sale of the building which then became a private house. A summer house and coach house were added by the new owner, Edward Burton, an auctioneer. The building was converted into six flats in 1981. The name Monument House is a reference to the nearby monument which is on the site of a former motte and bailey castle dating from the The monument is a stone obelisk which was constructed in 1788 to commemorate the centenary of the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688.
