20/05/11 TODAY Control Supervisor, Andrita Mezite, 23, checks this morning's crop before it is year could see one of Britain's best ever strawberry harvests. Two weeks earlier than expected pickers are working flat out at New Farm Produce near Lichfield, Staffordshire. Owner, Stephen McGuffie said: "The very nice spring weather was excellent for pollination and the contrast between cool nights and warm days helps to make the strawberries sweeter, bigger and juicier than "It's still early in the season so I can't tell if it's going to be a record yield, but it's definitely going to be a bumper crop."..The first strawberries of the season are grown under polytunnels - in another three weeks the farm will begin to pick from their fields supplying Sainsbury's with more than 500 tons of Rights Reserved - All Rights Reserved - F Stop Press (Formerly Picture It Now) - T: +44 (0)1335 copyright law applies to all print & online usage.
