Bramber, West Sussex, England: St Mary’s House, a medieval timber-framed house, originally an historic pilgrim inn dating from c. 1470. It was built by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and founder of Magdalen College, Oxford, as an inn for pilgrims to use on their way to the tomb and shrine of St Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. The origins of the house and its gardens go back to the days of the Knights Templar, when five acres of land in the village of Bramber were given to them by the widow of Philip de Braose after his death in 1125. The house was saved from semi-dereliction in 1984 by Peter Thorogood, author, composer and historian, and Curator Roger Linton, conservator, designer and landscape gardener. The village of Bramber is situated near the town of Steyning and overlooks the River Adur.
