A cone type geyser, Castle Geyser, a massive geyserite cone with eruptions of up to 100 ft once globular geyserite nobs around the cone most removed

Castle Geyser has one of the most massive geyserite cones worldwide, measuring 12 ft tall, 120 ft in circumference at the base, and 20 ft in diameter on top. Radiometric dating of the cone reveals a relatively young cone of about 1000 years, while the surrounding sinter shield is about 10,000 years old. Explorers of Yellowstone were not only impressed by Castle's size, but also by the exquisite globular ornamentation all around the cone. Until 1880 visitors chipped off most of the geyserite nodules, leaving behind the plain surfaces we see today.
