MRI surgery equipment in an operating room. This MRI scanner (centre), the Airis II from Hitachi, is an open MRI scanner, a type of MRI scanner originally designed to enable easier access for claustrophobic patients. In this case, the scanner is being used to enable surgeons to carry out scans on a patient during an operation. The MRI scanner's strong magnets require metallic surgical instruments to be kept outside the range of the magnetic field. The overhead lights are Skylux MRI lights, specially designed with non-metallic components to allow them to be used in the vicinity of MRI scanners. Photographed in Tokyo, Japan.
