In accordance with instructions received from you in thespring of 1879, I began the contour line survey of this dis-trict, with Mr. Charles L. Berkemeyer as rodman. Mr. A. P. Berlin had already completed a similar surveyof the Great or East Penn limestone valley as far west asReading; as far north as the roads along the edge of theNo. Ill {Hudson Jiiver) slates ; and as far south as a base-line in the mountains along the roads leading from Alburtis,in Lehigh county, through Stony Point and Pricetown, toHeading. These northern and southern base-lines were carefullyrun and leveled, and joined at the Reading depot with thelevels of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad. The East Penn railroad furnished an intermediate base-line. The open limestone country was then rapidly and accu-rately covered with 10 contour lines (refeiTed to oceanlevel) by Mr. Ber
