View NW of Loanhead of Daviot recumbent stone circle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, & the adjacent Bronze Age enclosed cremation cemetery which superseded it. The earlier circle has eight uprights plus a recumbent & two flankers around a kerbed ring cairn. The recumbent stone is at the SW aligned on the major southern moonset. The ring cairn with its open centre covers the remains of a funeral pyre. Flint scapers & knives, pot sherds, charcoal & human cremated bone, including 50 skull fragments of two- to four-year-old children, were found in the central area. Each circle stone stood within a small cairn over a pit seeded with pot sherds & charcoal. Funeral pyres were lit and cremated remains deposited within the later enclosure.
