He kept a wine-shop, but this does not appear to have metwith better success than his paintings, which wereso little appreciated that he became bankrupt in1662, but satisfied his creditors a few years later;he died poor, November 9, 1677. Scarcely any-thing is known of his life. He is said tohave painted some two hundred of these withouta single case of repetition. He occasionally paintedsunsets and often winter pieces, with figuresamusing themselves on the ice, in which he isscarcely surpassed. His best pictures have atransparency of colour, a lightness of band, ageneral freshness and sincerity, and a mastery ofcomposition, which gave them a very high rank inthe Dutch School. He signed his pictures with adouble monogram, an A interlaced with a V, and a D with an N 36CB1- Works; Amsterdam. Museum.
