Night-time shot of six neon sign dried food and Chinese medicine shops, Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Sai Ying Pun and Sheung Wan, at the north-western end of Hong Kong Island, are two of the oldest, least modernised parts of Hong Kong. Everyday Hong Kong street life is seen in the atmospheric streets and alleyways, where open-fronted 'shop-houses', with goods overflowing onto the pavement, sell everything from daily necessities to traditional Chinese medicine, such as edible birds' nests, powdered antelope horn, shark's fin and abalone. Wing Lok Street and Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, are both lined with shops selling ginseng root and edible birds' nests. Local people wear smog masks as a protection against both air pollution and infectious disease. Visitors have to sign forms declaring themselves free of infectious disease.
