Joseph, who was born November 26,1760, and died February 12, 1831, married ElizabethThorn, born September 29, 1770, and died April,;). Their children were Phebe (who married IsraelTownsend, 2d), Esther, Thorn and Joseph. For many years the manufacture of shoes has beenan important industry in North Castle. Shoebosses have had their shops and stores in differentparts of the town, the workmen, Formerly inure thannow, taking to their homes, such work as could be. there performed. In 1851 Armonk was a flourishingcentre of this business. Shops increased in their fa-cilities, plots of land were sold, and many houses ofmodest but comfortable character were built. Thesecircumstances drew the centre of population awayfrom the old site, or perhaps, more correctly, in-creased it in the new situation. The shoe-manufact-uring business is still of considerable importance, theprincipal manufacturers being A. M. McDonald, andAcker Brothers. An interesting association of this village which isworth preserving, is that of the Old Log Cabin,which stood where the Methodist Church is now. Itwas built for the use of the Whig party, for holdingpolitical meetings during the Harrison campaign of 1840.
