Seen here is an artist's rendition of the Midcourse Space Experiment satellite, launched in 1996 by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. The 1st Space Operations Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo., provided command and control of the satellite from Dec. 4, 1998 until its deactivation June 2, 2008. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., developed, tested, integrated and launched MSX, operated the satellite's bus and provided technical advisers and system engineers to lend their expertise to MSX's mission.
