Long poles ready for bark stripping and to use as hanging props for drying tobacco leaves inside a drying shed in Valle de Vinales, Pinar del Río Province, a UNESCO world cultural landscape in west Cuba, Cuba. Tobacco is not a native of Cuba but is believed to have arrived from the Latin Americas between 2000 and 3,000 BC. The new plant was called ‘Cohiba’ and retains that name with the Cohiba brand today which is one of Cuba’s chief exports. Cuban cigars are regarded as the very best in the world. Cuba has excellent conditions for growing tobacco and several hundred years of growing experience.
