Speculative illustration of an Earth-like extrasolar planet (right) orbiting a brown dwarf (left). The sunward side of this brown dwarf reveals a gas giant similar in appearance to the planet Jupiter. Unlike Jupiter, this brown dwarf is 13 to 65 times more massive while its diameter is only slightly greater than Jupiter's due to its greater density. Also, unlike Jupiter, the shaded side reveals a relatively dim magenta glow, a result of lithium and/or deuterium fusion.
