The Whitsuntide Festival is organised by the Festival Committee and a group of hugely dedicated friends in Goosnargh & Whittingham, close to the city of Preston in Lancashire, North West England. The Festival Day on the Saturday after Spring Bank Holiday Monday continues a tradition at least a century old (see our History Page), featuring a Community Procession through the village. The parade of the festival banner, decorated floats, fancy dress competitions, displays of Maypole Dancing and visiting marching bands all set the scene for the crowning of the year’s “Festival Queen” who supports village charity activities during her reign. The day is wrapped up with the Family Tea held in Goosnargh Village Hall. Goosnargh and Whittingham are twin villages located a couple of miles north-west of Preston in Lancashire UK, close to the town of Longridge. Thousands of people once again lined the route of the procession which included no less than nine, gaily decorated floats, four bands and six queens and their retinues; flower girls; fancy dress entrants; banners and dignatories including the Mayor Preston, maypole dancers Amongst the floats, it was nice to be reminded of the forthcoming St Mary's Flower Festival later this month and of Goosnargh and Longridge Show in July. And not only was there strong support from village organisations and schools for this section, but also by families and friends. Fancy dress entrants too, excelled themselves with all kinds of original, traditional and entertaining ideas. This year also saw a full procession back to the village for the renowned festival tea and fair - with young flower girls skipping back along the route.
