Fecundity and gonadal dimorphism L. tenera examined typically had two gonads in each arm. The ripe ovaries were small, lobate, and concentrated at the base of the arm, and mature testes were branched and some (by folding) exceeded the arm in length (Worley, et ai, 1977). The contrasting size of the gonads in males and females of different sizes is shown in Figure The length of the ovaries was directly proportional to the size of the seastar (Fig. 8). The number of oocytes was also a direct function of the size of the female (Worley, et al., 1977). Coefficients of determination (r) calculated from the sets of data for males and females show that 91% of the variability of ovary length, but only 18% of the variability of testis length, is explained by the size of the seastar (Fig. 8).
