The degree of Knight Commander of the Temple is sometimescalled Teutonic Knight of the House of St. Maiy of Order originated at the siege of St. Jean dAcre, when tentswere made for the sick and wounded of the sails of the ships;and while they fought the infidel Saladin by day, and nursed thesick and wounded soldiers by night, the Knights engagedthemselves to guard the city of Jerusalem against the Saracens;to protect Christendom; to succor and assist the feeble and op-pressed, and to defend the innocent. Their five excellent quali-ties were Humility, Temperance, Chastity, Generosity, andHonor; and they practised all the Masonic virtues. This is thefirst strictly chivalric degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scot-tish rite.
