Water hyacinth wasterwater treatment research. Roots of a water hyacinth (Eichhornia sp.) plant used in research into wastewater treatment. Water hyacinth is a fast-growing aquatic plant found in tropical and subtropical areas. Research by NASA has shown that it is able to thrive on sewage and convert it into relatively clean water. Water hyacinth treatment systems are cheaper than conventional systems. The plants need to be harvested at intervals to maintain effectiveness and can be used as fertiliser, biofuel or animal fodder. Photographed at NASA's Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, USA.
