We shall merely mention a few ofthe most striking paintings^ (for it is hard to beheve themaught else.) They are, Surrender of Mary, Queen ofScots, Defence of Queen Catharine, The Resignation ofthe Crown by Mary, Queen of Scots, Little Eva, TheTribute Money, The Escape of King Edward, and somany others that it is impossible to enumerate them inour contracted limits. Continuing on our way, we soon. reach the Charlestown Navy Yard. This naval depotis situated on the north side of Charles River, on a point CHARLESTOAVN NAVY YARD. 159 of land east of the centre of the city of Charlestown, ex-tending along the harbor from the mouth of the Charlesto the mouth of the Mystic River. This yard was pur-chased by the United States, under authority of an act ofCongress, in the year 1800. The State of Massachusetts,by an act of the legislature of that year, gave its assent to ^the sale, under certain restrictions. The cost of the wholepurchase, including commissions, was about forty thousanddollars. On the side next the town the yard is protectedby a wall of stone masonry, sixteen feet high; on theharbor side are several wharves and a dry dock ; exceptthe approach to these, a sea wall is extended the wholeharbor line. This dry dock was authorized by the nine-teenth Congress, commenced 10th July, 1827, and openedfor the reception of
