In cold weather the flock isshut up in the building, but in ordinary weather merely kept in the yard. In the summer monthsthe shepherds sleep with their flocks where they arepastured, with only a stout hedge or palisade ofthorn-bushes to protect them from wild beasts. Sheep-gate, the (Heb. sfiaar hats-tson), one of thegates of Jerusalem as rebuilt by Nehemiah ( 1, 32, xii. 39). It stood between the tower ofMe ah and the chamber of the corner (iii. 32, 1) orgate of the guard-house (xii. 39, A. V. prison-gate ). The latter seems to have been at the angleformed by the junction of the wall enclosing theTemple with that of the city of Jerusalem proper,having the sheep-gate on the N. of it.
