Ice feathers are made up of single, columnar ice crystals, some of which grow out from others at large angles and thus build up a delicate spatial array of tiny crystals. See air hoar. ; formed by icy winds, they show which direction the prevailing wind has been coming from, which can help in avalanche prediction; the ice feathers have formed on the windward side of each boulder, and a snowdrift on the lee side; weather, climate, meteorology, elements; The Cairngorms consist of a plateau, the highest in the British Isles, and glacial mountains. The highest point is at 1310 metres above sea level. The mountains are contained within the Cairngorms National Park, which was created in 2003. Four of the five highest Scottish mountains are within the Cairngorms.
